19.95 million foreign tourists visited India in 2013

In a good sign for Indian economy, the foreign tourist inflow in India has witnessed steep increase in 2013.

New Delhi, July 7/Nationalturk – 19.95 million foreign tourists visited India in 2013.

“During 2013, 19.95 million foreign tourists visited India in 2013,” an official of Indian tourism ministry said.

“The number of foreign tourist visits to different Indian States went up from 18.26 million in 2012 and 19.50 million in 2011,” the official said.

He said during 2013, number of foreign tourist visits to different Indian states registered a growth of 9.24% over 2012 as compared to a negative growth of 6.3% in 2012 over 2011.

4.15 mn foreign tourists visited Maharashtra

“Maharashtra topped the Indian states with 4.16 million foreign tourists visiting the State last year, 3.99 million foreign tourists visited Southern India state of Tamil Nadu, 2.30 million foreign tourists visited Delhi, 2.05 million foreign tourists visited India’s most populous state Uttar Pradesh, 1.44 million foreign tourists visited Rajasthan, 1.25 million foreign tourists visited West Bengal, 0.86 million foreign tourists visited Kerala, 0.77 million foreign tourists visited Bihar, 0.64 million foreign tourists visited Karnataka and 0.49 million foreign tourists visited beach State of Goa.

“The contribution of top 10 States was about 89.9% to the total number of foreign tourist visits in India during 2013,”the official said.

Indian government is providing visa on arrival facilities to nationals of at least 11 countries and is mulling to increase this facility to nationals of more countries to ensure more tourists visit the country.
