In yet another instance of foreign climbers going missing in country, two climbers from New Zealanders, who were on expedition to scale world’s second highest mountain K-2 in Karakoram range in Pakistan, have gone missing.

Islamabad, July 29/Nationalturk – Two climbers from New Zealanders, who were on expedition to scale world’s second highest mountain K-2 in Karakoram range in Pakistan, have gone missing.

“Martin Walter Schmidt and his son Denali Walter Schmidt went missing on Sunday afternoon while they were on an expedition to scale K-2 (8,611 metres high) in Pakistan,” Alpine Club of Pakistan said in a statement.

It said father-son duo had successfully reached Camp III at 7,400 metres on July25. “The rest of the climbers accompanying the duo had decided to descend from the peak and return to base camp”.

It further said the Nepali Sherpas accompanying the father-son duo had turned back due to adverse weather conditions and threat of avalanches.

Avalanches had reportedly struck Camp IV, present at 8000 metres.

Base camp leader lost contact with Kiwi climbers on July 26

The club said the base camp group leader Australian Christopher Mellor Madden Warner lost contact with the Kiwi mountaineers on July 26.

“A Nepali Sherpa, who was sent to Camp III a day later to ascertain the location of the Kiwi mountaineers, reported yesterday (July 28) that they could not be located in the Camp III tent. The tent showed signs of having been hit by an avalanche. The mountaineer’s ice axes and crampons were found intact,” it said.

It is being presumed that both the climbers might have been swept down by an avalanche.

Operation to trace missing mountaineers launched

The authorities have launched a rescue operation to trace missing New Zealand climbers.

Earlier, this month three Iranian and three Spanish climbers went missing during the expeditions. Authorities have declared them dead.

Last month tragedy had struck foreign nationals in Karakoram peaks when Pakistan Taliban militants killed 10 foreign climbers.
