Militants killed two policemen in Indian administered Kashmir on Saturday morning.

Srinagar, March 2/Nationalturk – In the first major violence related incident of 2013, the militants killed two policemen in Indian administered Kashmir on Saturday morning.

Police sources said militants fired from point blank range towards two policemen near the bus stand in Handwara town, 75 kilometres north from Srinagar, summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir, this morning.

They said the policemen sustained critical injuries in the shoot-out. “The militants fled away from the spot after the incident leaving the two policemen in pool of blood”.

“The injured policemen were evacuated to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead,” sources said.

Not known whether weapons were snatched from cops

However, it was not clear whether the weapons of the dead policemen were also snatched by the militants.

Immediately after the militant attack, police and paramilitary soldiers laid siege around the area to flush out the militants responsible for the attack. However, no arrests were reported.

A police spokesman has confirmed the incident and killing of two policemen.

He said the incident took place at 1110 hours (IST) and identified the deceased policemen as  26-year-old Constable Santosh Singh (Belt No. 285/AP 13th Bn) and constable  Azad Chand , 27 (Belt No. 199/AP 13th Bn).

He said both of them had joined the police force in 2009.

Today’s attack was the first major militant attack on police in 2013.

No militant group has owned the responsibility of the attack by police believe that attack may have been carried out by militants of Pakistan based militant group, Lashkar-e-Toiba.
