In yet another bad news for social activists and groups fighting for cause of children, at least 75000 children have gone missing in India in last three years.

New Delhi, March 6/Nationalturk – At least 75000 children have gone missing in India in last three years and are still untraceable.

“About 2.36 lakh children went missing in Indian in last three years,” Indian Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Paban Singh Ghatowar told upper house of parliament (Rajya Sabhya) today.

He said of the 2.36 lakh missing children, 161800 were traced. “However, about 75000 children are still untraced,” he said.

The minister said as per a data of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in Indian administered Kashmir, 366 children had gone missing in 2009. “Of these 247 were traced while 119 were not traced. “In 2011, 441 children had gone missing in the region. Of these 340 were traced while 101 are still untraceable”.

1231 missing children in Delhi not traced in 2011

Singh said in Indian capital (Delhi), which has earned notoriety of being rape capital, 5946 children went missing in 2009. “Of these 5365 were traced while 581 were untraceable. Similarly in 2011, 6054 children went missing in Delhi. Of these 4823 were traced while 1231 were untraceable”.

The minister said Indian government has issued advisories to States to appoint nodal officers at all police stations to deal with such cases and make registration of FIRs mandatory.

Stating that the problem of children going missing was due to economic and social reasons and also due to criminal activities, he said the issue of missing children has assumed an “alarming proportion”.

There are also concerns that some of the missing children may have fallen victim of human traffickers.
