An earthquake of 5.1 magnitude hit the Aegean Sea in the early hours on Monday, Greek islands and western Turkish coast shook violently.

İzmir / NationalTurk – The earthquake struck at 08.17 GMT the weatern coast of Turkey and Greek islands. The quake’s epicentre is in the Aegean Sea, the Istanbul-based Kandilli seismological observatory.

The quake was keenly felt in Turkey’s Aegean provinces Izmir and Aydin. The tremor also caused panic in Greek islands near to Turkey west coast. There was no immediate report of casualties or damages.

Turkey is crossed by numerous faultlines, one major line crossing the Northern Anatolia, while Taurus faultline crosses South Anatolia.

A powerful earthquake shook eastern Turkey on October 23, killing more than 600 people, which was followed on November 12 by a 5.6 magnitude earthquake that killed another 40 people in the eastern province of Van.

In 1999, two strong quakes in the North Anatolian faultline hit heavily populated and industrialised parts of northwest Turkey and more than 20000 perished.
