Presidential elections run-off

After only a week in office Foreign Minister of Romania Teodor Melescanu has resigned. He also took responsibility for the problems in the presidential election in Romania consulates.

Before embassies and consulates in Europe were lining up for miles Romanian voters formed due to fewer polling stations on Sunday, which provoked strong criticism in the population. Now Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu draws the consequences – and wants to resign after only eight days in office. “I will submit my resignation to the Cabinet meeting,” Melescanu said in Bucharest.

Romania’s newly elected President Klaus Johannis was the chief diplomat complained that in some places caused a riot in the election. In Paris and in Turin, police used tear gas against Romanians who wanted to vote in the local consulates.

Already in the first round in early November were thousands Romanians abroad not vote because the consulates not coped with the onslaught. Critics accused the Socialist government to have deliberately impeded the vote, because the Romanians living abroad rather not choose left.

Melescanu apologized now that with thousands exiled Romanians not enough polling stations had been available. Its predecessor was forced to resign because of the problems in the organization of the first round.
