Ajax Amsterdam issued an apology and promised tough action against the supporter whose attack on the AZ Alkmaar goalkeeper Estaban at Dutch cup match led to the game being abandoned.

Amsterdam / NationalTurk – “This is a terrible incident and we at Ajax regret very much. We are offering our sincere apologies. The supporter has been handed over to the police,” Ajax financial director Jeroen Slop announced via statement the Ajax website.

The fan ran onto the pitch in the 37th minute of the Ajax Az Alkmaar Dutch cup game at the Amsterdam Arena and kicked at AZ goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado. The Costa Rican keeper defended himself and kicked twice at the fan he layed on the ground.

Match referee Bas Nijhuis sent furious goalie Estaban Alvarado off, which prompted the outraged AZ manager Gert Jan Verbeek to call his team off the pitch. The AZ team did not return to play on because of security concerns. That was not the end of trouble as in the stadium police used water cannons against angry fans and arresting eight.

KNVB, the ruling football body of Holland has to decide from three options how to treat the game: declare Ajax 1-0 winners, complete the game or replay it, what will be decided by the prosecutor of football. But The KNVB decided to overrule the red card AZ Alkmaar keeper had received for kicking the mad fan on the ground.
