A Norwegian court is due to deliver its verdict on Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people and injured 242 others in a murderous rampage against multiculturalism at Utoya island last year.

A panel in Oslo, Norway will announce its verdict in the trial of Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik who has admitted killing 77 people including dozens of teenagers on the island of Utoya during twin attacks.

The massacre of 77 people in twin attacks in July last year have stunned the world. Many of the victims were young people, gunned down while they took part in a Norwegian Labour Party youth camp on the island of Utoya.

Anders Behring Breivik had previously planted a bomb outside the government’s headquarters in Oslo before going on a shooting rampage, disguised as a policeman.

Verdict on Norwegian murderer Anders Breivik due in Norway

Norwegian mass killer Anders Breivik has admitted the killings but has denied guilt, claiming self-defence. The 33-year-old former neo-Nazi Anders Breivik, told the Oslo court he carried out the attacks to defend Norway against the evils of multiculturalism.

Beyond being the most high-profile criminal trial in Norway since Nazi collaborators were prosecuted following World War II, the case also has a peculiar twist – Anders Breivik says he will appeal an insanity ruling but accept a prison term.

A survivor of the shooting Nicoline Bjerge Schie said : ‘ It has been a tough year… but I don’t want to be Utoeya-Nicoline for the rest of my life. ‘

Whatever the 5 judges decide, Anders Breivik will be locked up in solitary confinement inside the maximum security Ila prison on the outskirts of Oslo. If found sane, Anders Behring Breivik will return to his relatively spacious cells, enjoying the comforts of a computer, newspapers and a separate exercise room.

Although the maximum sentence is 21 years, prisoners can be held indefinitely if deemed dangerous and few believe anyone would ever sign Anders Breivik’s release papers.

Oslo court to deliver Anders Breivik verdict

If the court finds him insane, murderer Anders Breivik will be ordered to undergo treatment at a closed psychiatric unit – most likely at the same high-security prison where he is now. But accused Norwegian mass killer Breivik has said that psychiatric care would be worse than death.

Breivik’s defence team has said that he will lodge an appeal against an insanity verdict. Two teams of court-appointed psychiatrists who examined Anders Breivik have reached different conclusions. The first said that he was a paranoid schizophrenic, but the second found that he was sane.

Earlier this month, Norway’s police chief Oeystein Maeland resigned after an independent inquiry found that Breivik could have been stopped. The report also criticised the unacceptable length of time police took to respond to the shootings.

Last year’s attacks sparked a national debate in Norway about the nature of tolerance and democracy in the country.
