Arsenal beats Galatasaray 4-1 in Champions League

English team Arsenal pounded Turkish side Galatasaray 4-1 at their home ground, Turk Telekom Arena in Istanbul, in the UEFA Champions League’s Match Day six game Tuesday night.

In the third minute of play, visitors Arsenal took the lead when German forward Lukas Podolski smashed the ball into the net.

The close range drive of Podolski beat Turkish goalkeeper Sinan Bolat and went to the top corner of the goal, 1-0.

“Gunners” Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey doubled the score in the 11th minute. Ramsey dribbled into the Galatasaray area and easily found the net, 2-0.

In the 19th minute, Galatasaray midfielder Felipe Melo’s long range drive shaved the bar. A minute later Podolski’s shot rattled the woodwork.

Ten minutes later Arsenal midfielder Ramsey’s long range missile hit the jackpot, 3-0.

Five minutes to go Joel Campbell tried to score the fourth goal for Arsenal, however, Galatasaray goalkeeper Sinan Bolat made the save.

Two minutes to go, Galatasaray’s Dutch attacking midfielder Wesley Sneijder scored from the free kick, 3-1.

In stoppage time, Podolski made it four by putting the ball into the net in the box, 4-1 and the game was over.

Staying at the bottom of the group, the Galatasaray “Lions” set a new record after conceding 19 goals in the Champions League group stage. They conceded the most goals ever in the league among other Turkish teams. The record in this field before belonged to another Turkish club Besiktas, conceding 17 goals in the 2007-08 season in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, in another match of the group, Borussia Dortmund drew against Belgian club Anderlecht 1-1 at their home ground Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund, however, the German side managed to lead Group D by goal average.

English team Arsenal qualified for the next round as runners-up and Belgian Anderlecht went to Europa League after ending this stage in third place.
