Arsenal adds Lukas Podolski to next years squad. Köln’s Lukas Podolski poised for £10.9m summer move to Arsenal after midnight talks between Arsenal and Fc Köln executives.

London / NationalTurk – Lukas Podolski is ready to join Arsenal from Köln at the end of the season after both club’s executives reached an agreement in principle on a £10.9m transfer last evening. Polish-born German Lukas Podolski has won 95 caps for Germany. The Germany striker will sign a four-year contract which will earn him £100,000 a week, German tabloid Sport-Bild reported.

Arsène Wenger has been under pressure after many trophy-less seasons to bolster his attacking options because the cover behind Robin van Persie, the captain, has looked thin, with neither Marouane Chamakh or Park Ju-young having convinced Arsenal fans, board and the manager itself.

Robin Van Persie, the best striker if not the best player on current Arsenal roster, who is close to the final 12 months of his Arsenal deal and has placed new contract talks on hold until the summer, must also be persuaded about the club’s ambition. Filthy-rich Manchester City is considering to land the Dutch striker at Etihad Stadium.

Lukas Podolski’s arrival would represent a coup and it reinforces Wenger’s shift in transfer policy towards more established players. Still only 26, the Poland-born Podolski has played at the highest level since his late teens, when he broke into the Germany National Team squad. He has enjoyed a positive season, with 16 Bundesliga goals so far, but he has grown disillusioned at Köln’s direction, although Lıcas Podolski mentioned several times that playing for Köln is his dream come true. His loyality to Köln was considered one of the most genuine ones in the rather harsh capitalistic football industry of today. Köln languish just above the relegation places in the Bundesliga, with only 25 points from 24 games.

Lukas Podolski had always been loyal to Köln, but it was about time for a change in Arsenal

Lukas Podolski, who played for Bayern Munich from 2006 to 2009 before rejoining his former club, has been quiet about his possible move to Arsenal but the Köln manager, Stale Solbakken, admitted last month that he feared he was set to lose the forward to the London club.

Russian sides, Lokomotiv Moscow and Anzhi Makhachkala have also been chasing Lukas Podolski, and could have offered bigger money, but Podolski said recently his move would not be determined by the highest bidder. “Money is not the most important thing for me,” he told Sport-Bild. “What is crucial is the development of my game.”

Arsenal Transfer Operations have been launched

Per Mertesacker, a Germany team-mate whose transfer from Werder Bremen to Arsenal was completed last summer, told German television on Wednesday that Lukas Podolski had been asking him about life in London and at the Emirates. “He has been very interested for the past few weeks,’ Mertesacker stated. ‘ Lukas has sent me a number of text messages, and I have told him this is a great place to work and Arsenal are an amazing club.’
