No one was reported hurt and the pilot and passenger, Washington Post transportation reporter Ashley Halsey managed to walk away from the flipped plane without any sign of injury.

Eight 1943 Boeing Stearman PT-17’s were flown into the airport and were being used to promote the “Legends of Flight” 3D IMAX film at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board said officials.

Halsey who spoke to WJLA-TV after the crash said “I could hear the propeller crunch as it hit the tarmac. We were hanging upside down on our shoulder harnesses” describing the moment when the plane flipped over.

From the amateur footage, which has since gone viral on popular video sharing websites, the plane is seen descending onto the runway as normal but when the wheels touches the ground, the plane suddenly flips over.

According to sources, the pilot has told investigators that he was travelling at 70 mph and put the brakes on during landing when the plane flipped over.

The runway was reopened within 90 minutes after a crane was used to lift the bi-plane off the runway.
