Dramatic footage of scaffolding dropping on top of cars was filmed on amateur camera after a tornado hit Puerto Rico while preparations were being made for the Central American and Caribbean Games on Saturday.

Five people were reported injured including a three year old toddler and an employee who had three fingers amputated.

The waterspout which hit the Mayaguez municipality toppled over the scaffolding at the Jose Figueroa Olympic Stadium where the Central American and Caribbean Games ceremony were to start.

Fans and spectators had already started to enter the stadium when the storm hit.

Police Col. Francisco Carbo said on Saturday “At the moment we have information that people are injured and the meteorologists have told us they expect two similar episodes during the afternoon.”

The start of the games was then postponed to Sunday where a less fantastic ceremony was organized to mark the beginning of the games due to the special effects equipment being damaged during the storm.

The Games organizers have confirmed that 31 nations will take part in the competition which will consist of several activities such as diving, swimming, fencing, track and field, boxing and soccer.
