Chicago Shootings:10 people died and many injured weekend violence / US News

Rash of Violence Plagues Holiday Weekend

Ten men have died and more than 50 people, including two boys aged 5 and 7, have been wounded in a spate of holiday weekend shootings in Chicago.

One of the incidents on Saturday night proved especially violent, killing a man in his late forties and wounding six others.

A 25-year-old man was shot and killed earlier on Saturday outside his home.

Among the wounded are a seven-year-old boy who was shot on Thursday night and Jaden Donald, aged five, who authorities and relatives said has been operated on several times since being shot in the abdomen in a park early on July 4.

Police said two men, aged 34 and 28, were also wounded.

Prosecutors have charged Darrell Chambers with three counts each of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery.

He was denied bail by Cook County Associate Judge Adam Bourgeois, who told the man “there are no conditions I can set to keep the community safe,” the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Authorities also said 17-year-old Christian Green was shot and killed by Chicago police on Thursday after he allegedly pointed a gun at officers.

Despite the scale of the violence over the Independence Day holiday weekend, there were fewer homicides in Chicago in the first six months of 2013 compared to the same period last year.

Overall, there were 500 shootings in 2012 – many more than America’s other major cities. The murder rate typically goes up in the summer months.

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn said such continued violence underscores why he dramatically altered a gun bill that will end the state’s last-in-the nation ban on carrying concealed firearms – a prohibition that has been declared unconstitutional by a federal appeals court.

“That ought to be an alarm bell to all of us that we need strong laws that protect the public safety, especially when it comes to guns,” he told reporters after speaking at a church on the city’s West Side on Sunday.

“It’s time to end the violence,” he added.

Governor Quinn, who has also advocated for a statewide assault weapons ban, spent much of the holiday weekend discussing the violence.

Illinois politicians have to come up with a law by Tuesday and are expected to override Quinn’s proposals, which include provisions for a one-gun limit on the number of weapons a person can carry and a ban on guns at establishments with alcohol licences.
