Chile awaits Education Reform through Crisis
Chile awaits Education Reform through Crisis

The Chilean Student Federation rejected government proposals, believing they do not meet their demands for a reform to the education system in Chile.

Students are not demanding a better funding of higher education; what they want is a profound and more systemic reform and they have made specific demands toward that goal, stated Camila Vallejo, president of the Chilean University Students Federation.

The answer given by Education Minister Joaquin Lavin is insufficient, has a lot of ambiguities and makes no reference to certain areas of their demands, said Giorgio Jackson, a leader student at Catholic University.

Superficial solutions to the Chile Education Reform & Crisis

According to Jaime Gajardo, president of the Teachers Association, the government solution to the education crisis is mainly superficial, and does not focus on the recovery of public education in the country.

Lavin met last week with teachers and student leaders and gave them a draft with various sections, among these the so-called Public University Education Revitalizing Fund, with funds of 75 million USD.

Chile : Education for Profit ?

Meanwhile, both university and secondary school student leaders reiterated their call for a second national strike on Thursday to protest education for profit.

On June 16, more than 200,000 people marched throughout Chile for education protests to demand free public education.
