In a significant giant leap in Information Technology, a super computer developed by China has been ranked as the world’s fastest computing system by a survey.

New Delhi, June 17/Nationalturk-  In a significant giant leap in Information Technology, a supercomputer developed by China was ranked as the world’s fastest computing system by a survey released on Monday. The Chinese supercomputer has pushed super computer of United States to No 2 position.

“According to TOP500, a project ranking the 500 most powerful computer systems in the world, Tianhe-2 developed by China’s National University of Defense Technology, was capable of operating as fast as 33.86 petaflops per second, earning it the number one spot in the Top 500 survey of supercomputers,” Chinese State news agency, Xinhua reported.

The TOP500 list, released twice a year since June 1993, is considered the authoritative ranking of the world’s supercomputers.

Tianhe-2 has overtaken US’s Titan Super computer

Tianhe-2 has overtaken United States, Titan super computer, which is now ranked No. 2 with a performance of 17.59 petaflops per second. Titan has been installed at US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Xinhua reported that Tianhe-2 meaning Milky Way-2, marks China’s return to No. 1 position of the TOP500 list since November 2010, when Tianhe-1A was the top system. “Tianhe-1A is now the No. 10 system on the list.”

“Tianhe-2 is a great accomplishment for China,” TOP500 editor Horst Simon, deputy director of the US. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory said.

Simon said Tihanhe-2 demonstrates that China can build a large system with a string component of domestically developed technology. “It shows China’s strong technology investments in high-performance computing (HPC)”.

5 of world’s 10 fastest super computer installed in US

According to Top 500 survey of supercomputers, five of world’s 10 fastest computers are installed in US. “Two are in China, two others are in Germany and one is in Japan”.

“US continues to be the leading country in HPC. However, the gap is closing. The worldwide HPC distribution may be changing in the next decade,” Simon said.

He said countries like India and Brazil are expected to invest more heavily and China could become an exporter for HPC technology to developing countries. “There are many potentially big changes ahead, as many countries continue to industrialize and then recognize the value of HPC”.

  1. The Chinese just copied the design of the super computer from the US. Then they made one million child laborers expand the setup twice. So they now have the world fastest with a speed twice that of the US’s top HPC.
