The Congress party is all set to form next government in India’s Southern State of Karnataka by winning the Assembly election held on May 5.

New Delhi, May 8/Nationalturk – The Congress party is all set to form next government in India’s Southern State of Karnataka as the party was leading in 120 seats out of 224-seat Assembly, the elections for which were held on May 5.

The Congress will return to power in Karnataka after seven years. The party has won 107 seats and was leading in 13 others, thus taking party’s toll to 120 seats. The party is all set to secure a clear majority on its own.

The rightwing Hindu party BJP, which was heading the previous government, suffered humiliation as most of its candidates lost. The party was expected to get 40 seats.  It was leading in 8 seats and has won 32 seats so far.

The Janata Dal (Secular) of former Indian Prime Minister H D Dewegowda has won 32 seats and was leading in eight others. “If people have blessed us to sit in the opposition, we will sit in the opposition,” JD (S) state President and Gowda’s son HD Kumaraswamy told reporters.

At the Congress headquarters in Bangalore (Karnataka’s capital), Congress workers were celebrating the victory.

Among frontrunners for Chief Minister in the Congress are K Siddaramaiah, Veerappa Moily and Mallikarjun Kharge. However, the trio told media persons today that the party high command will decide about next chief minister.

The BJP has fared poorly even in urban strongholds like Bangalore, which has voted for Congress. According to political commentators, BJP has itself to blame for the humiliating loss. Saddled by corruption, infighting within the cadre and rebellion by BS Yeddyurappa, it was all the way down hill for the party that dreams of occupying the South Block in 2014.

“This accidental fluke victory of the Congress is because of the split in BJP votes,” said BJP’s senior leader Ravi Shankar Prasad.

The elections were held for 223 seats on Sunday (May 5). About 71.29 per cent voters exercised their right to franchise and the voter turnout was the second highest in the state history after 71.90 per cent in 1978.
