Construction of World's Extremely Large Telescope 2012 begins

Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) will be measured worldwide as one of the highest priorities in ground-based astronomy. The astronomers are very enthusiastic.

The researchers will vastly advance astrophysical euridition, allowing detailed studies of subjects discovering planets around other stars, the first objects in the Universe, super-massive black holes, and the nature and distribution of the dark matter and dark energy which dominate the Universe.

The biggest eye on the sky – European Extremely Large Telescope

Since the end of 2005 European Southern Observatory (ESO) has been working together with its user community of European astronomers and astrophysicists to prescribe the new giant telescope which will be needed by the middle of the next ten years. At present more than one hundred astronomers from all European countries have been involved throughout 2006, helping the ESO Project Offices to produce a novel concept, in which performance, cost, schedule and risk were cautiously evaluated.

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) governing body accepted the 2012 budget, which paves the way for precursory work to begin at the planned site of the European Extremely Large Telescope in the central part of Chile’s Atacama Desert.

The Design of Extremely Large Telescope in Chile

The Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), which represents a joint collaboration between fiveteen countries, will be the world’s largest ground-based optical telescope. Builders have chosen the observatory’s location in Chile because of the optimal weather conditions in the area. Skies are clear overhead approximately over three hundred nights of the year. Full approval of the project is expected by middle 2012.
