Ehud Olmert to six years in prison. The former Prime Minister of Israel was sentenced in a corruption trial. He had accepted bribes in the millions for a controversial building project.

For the first time in the history of Israel has an ex-head of government probably behind bars: Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was convicted of bribery – now he is six years in prison. This was decided by Judge David Rosen on Tuesday in Tel Aviv. In addition, he must pay a fine of 200,000 euros converted.

Olmert had recently again maintained his innocence, the 68-year-old wants to appeal the decision. Thus, the adhesive could be suspended until a final decision.
End of March, Olmert was found guilty by the District Court in Tel Aviv for corruption. Olmert and other suspects were accused of having inserted between 1994 and 2007 to promote the Holyland construction project in Jerusalem bribes in the millions. Olmert is said to have assumed as mayor of the town and later as Minister of Commerce funds.

The corruption charges against Olmert had led in the autumn of 2008 to overthrow his government and new elections in February 2009. Another corruption case against the former prime minister in September 2012 had got off lightly for him. At that time, Olmert was only sentenced to one year probation and a fine.

A former president of the country is already sitting in prison: Moshe Katsav was convicted in 2011 for rape and sexual harassment to a sentence of seven years.
