Counting of vote begins in India, BJP leader Modi set to be next Indian PM

The controversial leader of rightwing Hindu party BJP Narendra Modi is set to become next Prime Minister of India.

New Delhi, May 16/Nationalturk – The counting of votes for 543 seats of Indian parliament began early Friday morning and controversial leader of rightwing Hindu party BJP Narendra Modi is set to become next Prime Minister of India.

989 counting centres were set up across India to count the votes cast in 9-phase of general elections in the country. Postal ballots were counted first and later votes cast in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were counted.

Nearly 8,000 candidates were in the fray for the 543 seats in the Lok Sabha.

According to the initial trends, righting Hindu party BJP and its allies is set to sweep the polls and form next government in India.

At 1100 hours Indian Standard Time, BJP and its allies were ahead in 306 seats out of the 512 for which trends were available.

Congress staring at worst performance ever

The Congress, which was heading a coalition government in India, is staring at its worst performance ever with the party ahead in about 50 seats.  Congress’s prime ministerial candidate Rahul Gandhi is leading in his strong base of Amethi in Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. He was earlier running behind BJP candidate. Several Congress ministers are trailing.

Of the regional parties, Mamata’s Trinamool Congress was leading in 30 of the total 42 seats in West Bengal Bengal. Similarly, AIADMK in South India was leading in 30 seats.

Sensex crosses 25,000 mark

With the trends showing that BJP will form next government and Narendra Modi, presently chief minister of Gujarat, will be next prime minister of India, Sensex in India crossed 25,000 mark.

The financial experts said it is a good news and Indian rupee may be further strengthened.

The BJP camp has started celebrations while Congress had admitted defeat.

“It is collective failure and Rahul Gandhi alone cannot be blamed,” said Congress spokesperson Satyavrat Chaturvedi

He said Rahul Gandhi’s leadership is not to be blamed if the outcome of elections are not in favour of Congress. “It is a collective failure,” he added.
