Cracks have appeared in India’s rightwing party BJP after controversial Narendra Modi was appointed chief of campaign committee for 2014 parliament polls by the party. BJP’s senior leader and former Deputy Prime Minister of India L K Advani has resigned from all posts of the party.

New Delhi, June 10/Nationalturk- A day after controversial chief minister of Indian State of Gujarat Narendra Modi was appointed chief of campaign committee for 2014 parliament polls by the party, the crisis has gripped the rightwing party BJP as party’s senior leader and former Deputy Prime Minister of India L K Advani Monday resigned from all posts of the party.

Advani, 85, sent a letter to BJP president Rajnath Singh and apprised him that he has resigned from all posts of the party.

“For some time I have been finding it difficult to reconcile either with the current functioning of the party, or the direction in which it is going. I no longer have the feeling that this is the same idealistic party created by Dr Mookerji, Deen Dayalji, Nanaji and Vajpayeeji whose sole concern was the country, and its people. Most leaders of ours are now concerned just with their personal agendas. I have decided, therefore, to resign from the three main fora of the party, namely, the National Executive, the Parliamentary Board, and the Election Committee,” Advani wrote in the letter.

Upset Advani had not attended 2-day executive meeting

Advani, who served as Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister during BJP’s government led by Atal Bihar Vajpayee, had not attended two-day national executive meeting of the party in Indian State of Goa, which ended yesterday.

Although he had claimed that he did not attend the executive meeting owing to ill health but there were speculations that he was upset with Narendra Modi’s proposed elevation as campaign committee chief.

Sources said Advani is very upset over appointing of Narendra Modi, who is accused of 2002 anti-Muslim riots in his Gujarat State, as chief of campaign committee of party for 2014 parliamentary polls.

“Advani is the tallest leader of the party and should have been the prime ministerial candidate of party for 2014 polls. However, the party has sidelined him and preferred Modi to lead party in 2014 parliamentary polls,” they said adding this has hurt Advani and he was forced to announce resignation from all posts of the party.

Sources said BJP president Rajnath Singh called Advani at his residence in Delhi this afternoon in an attempt to appease him and convince him to rescind his resignations. “However, Advani refused to withdraw his resignations,” they said.
