Curfew, restrictions cripple life in Indian Kashmir for 8th day

Srinagar, July 2: In view of the proposed separatist march to “martyrs graveyard Iddgah”, authorities on Friday extended curfew and tougher security restrictions all across Indian Kashmir. Today was the 8th day of curfew and restrictions in the region, leading to shortage of essential commodities.

One of the Worst effected areas in the Kasmir curfew where security officers and paramilitary are finding it difficult to control protesters.

In the we hours of Friday, the authorities announced through public address system in Srinagar and other parts of Indian Kashmir about imposition of curfew and warned people not to venture out. The curfew was already in force in Sopore and Baramulla areas in North Kashmir, seven police station areas in Srinagar (the summer capital) and South Kashmir’s Islamabad and Pulwama districts.

“The curfew was extended all over the region to prevent people from responding to separatist call for marching towards Eidgah (martyrs graveyard),” a top government officials said. Thousands of police and paramilitary soldiers were deployed across the region and they had placed barricades and concertina wires on the roads to block all kind of movement.

People were not allowed to venture out of their homes.

Eidgah is the central place in Srinagar and hundreds of people, who were killed in turmoil in the region since 1989 are buried in the graveyard, named as “martyrs graveyard”. All roads leading to Eidgah were sealed by police and paramilitary soldiers, who had placed armoured vehicles on all the entry and exit points.
The cops did not even allow people to offer Friday prayers.

However, youth defied curfew and tougher security restrictions in some places and staged anti-India demonstrations. They clashed with the soldiers, who fired tear smoke canisters and resorted to baton charge to disperse the youth, who retaliated by hurling bricks and stones towards them. The clashes continued for some time.

Meanwhile, the Srinagar (summer capital) and other parts of Indian Kashmir are facing shortage of essential commodities owing to no relaxation in curfew and security restrictions. The curfew has been in force in Sopore and Baramulla in North Kashmir since June 25 when two youth died in paramilitary soldiers firing. The curfew was subsequently extended to seven police stations in Srinagar and Islamabad and Pulwama areas in South Kashmir after killing of six more youth in police and paramilitary soldiers firing.

The residents of curfew-hit areas have complained that they have exhausted their food stocks and are running short of essential commodities. “We are on verge of starvation. We don’t have food stuff. Even we don’t have food for our children,” they said.

They have asked the government to give relaxation in curfew so that they can purchase essential commodities and medicines.
