33 Killed as Cyclone Thane Throws Life out of Gear in India

Tamil Nadu has borne the brunt of the cyclonic storm while Andhra Pradesh escaped unscathed by Cyclone ‘Thane’ on Friday (December 30).

Until now 33 people were lost their life in the cyclone. Copious rains have lashed the South Coastal and Rayalaseema regions in Andhra Pradesh.

The cyclone is under constant watch of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). At least 10cm rainfall has been recorded in Chittoor and Nellore districts, bordering the storm ravaged Tamil Nadu. Water bodies are in spade due to continuous inflow.

A holiday was declared for all educational institutions in Chittoor district anticipating hardships brought by heavy rains. Flood turned roads into pools of water in Gudur, Sullerpet, Kota, Vakadu, Mutthukuru, Atmakur and the district headquarters in Nellore as well. A colossal crop loss has been reported from all the coastal districts due to the gusty winds in the last 48 hours.

Sea incursions and high tidal waves rendered the product of salt-makers on the shores useless. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea in view of the rough sea conditions.
