Developing Sustainable Cuba Tourism in Old Havana
29 June, 2011 | 10:17

Habaguanex hotels in Havana

The sustainable development of Cuba tourism is an essential element in the 4.5 square miles that make up Old Havana, with a special priority on recuperating historic buildings.

During a meeting with Latin American journalists, public relations expert Saray Moreira of the Cuban tourist company Habaguanex described its work in the leisure industry.

Habaguanex, which takes its name from the Taino chief who once controlled the area, was created on January 6, 1994 and is attached to the Havana City Historian’s Office, Moreira noted.

In Old Havana, the company runs 57 museums, 19 hotels (another opening soon) for Cuba tours, 39 restaurants, over 80 snack bars and bars, and about 80 stores, featuring well-known brands.

In 1996, the San Cristobal Travel Agency was created, and its offers include incentive travel, architecture, cultural and religious programs, among others, she said.

Establishments with personalized services and a culture of social communication motivated by a desire to demonstrate the cultural values of this part of Cuba are part of Habaguanex’s essential strategies, Moreira told reporters. Cuba Tours
