Dukan Diet innovator Pierre Dukan struck off as a doctor at French medical register after he was accused of giving dangerous advice to teenagers by suggesting slim pupils should given extra marks.

Paris / NationalTurk – Nutritionist Pierre Dukan the innovator of popular Dukan Diet would no longer be able to practice as a doctor in France after controversy kick-started over his remarks that slim school pupils should be given extra marks than those who are obese . It was also reported that the doctor himself had requested to remove him off the register after he was slammed for misguiding the teenagers.

Pierre Dukan, whose celebrity diet is championed by the likes of Carole Middleton, has been struck off the medical register at his own request, after medical experts accused him of giving damaging dietary advice to teenagers. Pierre Dukan, 70, asked to be removed from the doctors’ list at his own request because he was facing disciplinary action.

Dukan Diet guru Pierre Dukan : Children who lose weight should be given extra marks at school !

The popular nutritionist had used a book to propose ideal weights for 17 and 18 year-old school pupils, giving them extra exam marks if they kept to them, which stirred contoversy in France.

Pierre Dukan, whose protein-rich regime is also said to have helped the Duchess of Cambridge squeeze into her wedding dress, was already facing disciplinary action over proposals to award extra marks to schoolchildren who lose weight.

In a recent book, he proposed creating a so-called “ideal weight” option for ‘A’ level equivalent students in their final year exams, under which they would earn extra points for keeping slim.

It sparked a complaint by the French College of Physicians, which warned the proposal could prove harmful for pupils already suffering from obesity or anorexia.

The body said it was in breach of article 13 of the medical ethics code, which states: “A doctor must be aware of the repercussions his views can have on the public.”

They launched a second disciplinary action into whether the 100 million-euro (£80 million) business he runs from his diet food empire was compatible with the code of medical practice.

Dr Dukan argued that his books and exam proposals were part of a doctor’s right to “freedom of expression”.

He claimed the disciplinary proceedings were null and void as he had already effectively retired from being a medical practitioner in 2008, refusing any new patients as “I didn’t want to be accused of using my fame for the benefit of my practice”.

But on Wednesday, medical ethics chiefs told La Croix newspaper that he had only asked to be struck off the register on April 19.

“I think he made this decision when he saw things weren’t going his way in medical ethics circles,” said Dr Irène Kahn-Bensaude, head of the Paris branch of the College.

Dukan Diet followers : Carole Middleton, Supermodel Gisele Bundchen, Jennifer Lopez

Dukan Diet is said to be followed by the Duchess of Cambridge’s mother Carole Middleton. She suggested that Dukan’s move was part of a damage limitation exercise because a guilty verdict might damage his diet guru business.  Boasting a host of various other celebrity followers, including Jennifer Lopez, supermodel Gisele Bundchen and Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins, the Dukan Diet is composed of “attack”, “cruise”, “consolidation” and “stabilisation” phases.

But food experts have warned the regime is a ‘health hazard’ due to its very low vegetable and carbohydrate intake, while the British Dietitic Association voted it “the worst celebrity diet of 2011″, saying it was as potentially harmful as diets urging binge drinking. Furthermore experts from the British Dietetic Association named the Dukan Diet the worst celebrity weight loss plan last year, noting it has ‘absolutely no solid science behind it at all’.

The physicians said Dukan’s proposal was in breach of article 13 of the medical ethics code which states: ‘A doctor must be aware of the repercussions his views can have on the public.’

Although Dukan insisted that the advice contained in his best-selling books was all part of a doctor’s right to freedom of expression, there was also an allegation that Dukan’s £80 million plus slimming business might be in breach of medical codes. Pierre Dukan had retired as a medical practitioner anyway, and so insisted that the disciplinary proceedings were void.

Following recent events and comments from Pierre Dukan medical ethics chiefs have told that Dukan Diet innavator was asked to be struck off the register on April 19.

Dr Irene Kahn-Bensaude, head of the Paris branch of the Physicians’ College, commentd: ‘ I think Mr. Dukan already made this decision when he saw things were not going his way in medical ethics circles.’

And Dr Kahn-Bensaude insisted that Dukan’s move would not halt the disciplinary action against him, and that charges ‘will go all the way’.

While the millionaire author Pierre Dukan, who has sold more than 10million Dukan Diet copies, would no longer be available to practice as a doctor, it would be worth seeing what lies in his future after this disappointing episode of his life.
