Ecuadorian Census Reflects a Concentrated Economy

The Ecuadorian economy is extremely concentrated, since 1 percent of the commercial establishments accumulates 90 percent of the national sales, according to the secretary of the Ecuadorian Planning and Development Ministry (Senplades), Rene Ramirez.

Giving information on the first results of the 2010 National Economic Census, Ramirez noted that 95 percent of sales at the national level are concentrated in the top 10 percent of firms.

Seventy-two percent of the sale volume (45 of the economic establishments in Ecuador) is concentrated in Pichincha -where the Ecuadorian capital is- and Guayas (the second most important city).

In Pichincha, with 18 percent of Ecuadoriana, there is 47 percent of the national sales, while Guayas has 26 percent of the sales, with 25 percent of the Ecuadorian population.

The second most important conclusion of this economic census is that the greater market concentration there is, a greater poverty level corresponds.

Those provinces with greater business concentration are the ones with the biggest poverty indexes.

A third conclusion, Ramirez said, is that the greatest amounts of occupied persons are employed by small establishments, which hire between one and nine workers.

Forty-four percent of the Ecuadorian working mass (911,143 people) is now working in small establishments.

The census included all the companies and establishments in places where there are more than 2,000 people living.
