Egyptian Islamist president Mohammad Morsi is likely to visit Pakistan next month.

Islamabad, Feb 19/Nationalturk – In a significant development, which will boost the relations between two countries, Egyptian Islamist president Mohammad Morsi is likely to visit Pakistan next month.

“Morsi will visit Pakistan on March 18 to hold talks with his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari,” Pakistan newspaper, Express Tribune, quoted highly placed official sources as saying.

They said Pakistan president had invited Morsi for visit to the country and the later has accepted the invitation.  “He will arrive on a day long visit to Pakistan. He will also visit India”.

“No particular agenda has been set for the Pakistan-Egypt talks. The issues such as Middle East politics, Arab spring, Afghanistan, terrorism, Palestine and matters of bilateral interest of two countries will figure prominently in talks,” they said.

First Egyptian president to visit Pakistan since 1974

If Morsi visits Pakistan, it will be the first visit of any Egyptian president to Pakistan in 37 years. In 1974, the then Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat had attended the second OIC summit in Lahore.

It is pertinent to mention here that Morsi had cancelled his visit to Islamabad on November 22 last year. He was scheduled to attend the Developing-8 nations’ summit in Pakistan.

Morsi, a leading member of Islamist group Muslim Brotherhood, was elected as president in June 2012 in Egypt’s first election since a popular revolt brought down dictator Hosni Mubarak.
