Turkey beat neighbors and traditional rivals Greece in the FIBA World Championship with a 76-65 score line at the Ankara sports hall.

The win was far from comfortable for the hosts with Greece causing problems for the Turkish outfit especially in the second period.

Ersan Ilyasova after scoring another three pointer.

The game started off well for Turkey with Forward Ersan Ilyasova and center Omer Asik helping to lead the first period 22-15 over Greece.

The second period saw a Greek comeback with the Turkish outfit struggling as the visitors started to net the three pointers in but the “12 huge men” as they are called in Turkey managed to complete the second period 41-39 in the lead.

The third period is where the Turks started to put their game on and with Ersan Ilyasova scoring some important three pointers Turkey extended their lead to 65-51.

The third period came as the breaking point of the game with the Greek’s making mistakes and was the quarter where three pointers by Greece were being missed with the Turks managing to catch most of the rebounds.

In the fourth period, the Turks were the looking nervy and the Greeks at one point put the deficit to just eight points but Turkey managed to hold their composure and finished the game 76-65.

The star of the game was Ersan Ilyasova of the Milwaukee Bucks, who scored 26 points and was able to score all six attempts of his 3 pointers.

Turkey’s main drive came through the fanatic 10,000 strong fans that filled the Ankara Sports hall to capacity to watch the much awaited game.

An important note that I would like to also make is that one group of Greek fans opened a banner writing “We’re neighbors not enemies” in both Turkish and English after improved relations between the two neighboring countries.

I would hate to go into the topic of football during an article about Basketball but I see this as the duty of an aware citizen to say I just hope both Turkish and Greek football (soccer) fans can take example of the great awareness and friendliness that the Greek fans at the Ankara Sports Hall showed on Tuesday.

The win made Turkey guarantee to progress into the knockout stages and if the hosts beat Puerto Rico on Wednesday, they will guarantee top spot of Group Group C.
