The Nigerian Defense Ministry has said that the military in a special operation has successfully killed the deputy commander of the militant Boko Haram sect, amid seizing a large amount of ammunition in northeastern Nigeria.

The ammunition seized include 485 live ammunition, four AK 47 assault rifles, four Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs), 19 magazines, three Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and other locally made weapons.

The military said Momodu Bama who is also known as Abu Saad was shot and killed on 4 August in a special operation by the military dubbed “ Operation Restore Order’’ around the Bama corridor  in Borno state.

But many are questioning the rationale behind the military disclosing this information after almost a month after the purported killing of Abu Saad.

The Borno State spokesperson for the military-led Joint Task Force (JTF), Lt.-Col. Sagir Musa told the Nigerian Leadership Newspaper that the said deputy commander was killed alongside his father who is believed to be providing spiritual support to the group and dozen other members. The Defense Ministry said 17 other members of the sect were also killed in the operation.

“Abu Saad was Boko Haram’s Operation Officer and second in command to Abubakar Shekau and was one of the most vicious and heartless killers in the group and we have killed him in a special operation together with his father’’, Mr. Musa was quoted as saying.

Before he was killed, the security forces had placed a bounty of $ 155,339 as a reward leading to his capture.

The Defense Ministry also said in a statement that Momodu Bama has been personally leading attacks against troops and innocent citizens in the communities of Yobe and Adamawa.

BOKO HARAM

“A specialist in manning the anti-aircraft guns of the group, he is known to be vicious and heartless with a penchant for personally slaughtering and executing his victims,’’ the DefenseMinistry described him in a statement.

But this news comes after about 44 people were killed in Borno State over the weekend and the group leader, Abubakar Shekau appearing in a video claiming victory against the military and threatening the US of being its next target.

But the Nigerian Armed Forces have been on offensive to flush Boko Haram out of its northern strongholds with the army saying it has gained massive grounds against Boko Haram.

President Goodluck Jonathan had wanted to grant an amnesty to Boko Haram by setting up a committee to look into the affairs on how a peaceful dialogue can be achieved but the group refused to lay down their arms compelling the President to resort to military action against them.

Boko Haram is believed to have carried out a wave of bombings and assassinations since 2009, saying it wants to establish an Islamic state across Nigeria.
