Fire at Istanbul’s Main Train Station under Control

A fire that raged in the roof of a major train station on the Asian side of Istanbul on Sunday was taken under control, officials said.

The fire broke out on the roof of historic Haydarpasa train station in Turkey’s largest city at around 3.30 a.m.

“Fortunately, there are no casualties,” Istanbul governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu told reporters. But it is sad that such a historic building has been damaged, he added.

Dozens of firefighters battled the blazes that completely engulfed the roof of the station. The blazes destroyed the roof, sending a black cloud of smoke billowing across the city before fire fighters doused it from land and sea.

A witness said there was repair works on the roof before the fire broke out.

The Haydarpasa Station is a major intercity rail station and transportation hub in Istanbul. It is the busiest rail terminal in Turkey and the Middle East and one of the busiest in Eastern Europe.

Built in 1909 by German architects, the station is among the landmarks of the city and is still regarded as a historical monument.
