Ex-FIFA president Joao Havelange was formally identified for taking millions of dollars in payments from marketing deals.

Former world football president Joao Havelange has received enormous bribes from FIFA’s discredited former marketing company, court documents released in Switzerland reveal.

Ex-Fifa president Joao Havelange has officially received at least 1,5 million Swiss francs and executive committee member Ricardo Teixeira more than 12,5 million Swiss francs. They are the only 2 : Joao Havelange and Ricardo Teixeira FIFA officials named in the report.

The documents were released to 5 media organisations and detail the court settlement which closed a criminal probe of the ISL case last year. The enormous bribes, made by International Sport and Leisure (ISL), were detailed in documents made public by Switzerland’s supreme court and published by the BBC television.

FIFA’s discredited Swiss-based marketing partner collapsed in 2001 with debts of around 300 million dollars. International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) published also the Swiss court’s report on its website and in a statement world football’s governing body emphasised that while former FIFA president Joao Havelange and Ricardo Teixeira were identified quilty.

The court documents however has exposedl that FIFA chiefs had knowledge that former Fifa president Joao Havelange and Ricardo Teixeira had been paid bribes by International Sport and Leisure (ISL).

Joao Havelange, who remains FIFA’s honorary president, stepped down after a 48-year-spell as a member of the International Olympic Committee last year just days before an ethics hearing into his links with International Sport and Leisure.

Ex-Fifa president Joao Havelange was accused by a BBC documentary last year of kickbacks totalling one million dollars from ISL for granting lucrative World Cup contracts. Former Fifa president Havelange, who became an IOC member in 1963, was FIFA president between 1974-98 before he was replaced by Sepp Blatter, Havelange’s long time FIFA secretary general.

A few months ago Joao Havelange was discharged after 2 months in hospital in Rio de Janeiro where he was being treated for an ankle infection, cardiac and pulmonary problems.

A statement issued by the BBC said : ‘ A year long legal battle by BBC Panorama to force publication of documents related to a confidential police investigation into bribery and corruption at Fifa. This decision by the Federal Court is in line with what Fifa and the Fifa president have been advocating since 2011, when world football’s governing body announced its commitment to the publication of the ISL non-prosecution order. ‘
