Former Glaskow Rangers keeper Allan McGregor in Istanbul

Beşiktaş are reported to have agreed terms with Allan McGregor following a lengthy negotiation process which has ensued for nearly two months.

Allan McGregor is expected to arrive in Istanbul tomorrow evening, undergo a medical on Thursday and sign a two-year contract deal. The Scottish international was one of several players refusing to allow their contracts be transferred to new owner Charles Green’s, Newco Rangers proposal.

McGregor terminated his agreement with Rangers under the, Transfer of Undertakings legislation however, Green disputes these claims. The experienced keeper spent six seasons at Rangers and has 21 Scotland international caps.

McGregor’s agent David Baldwin had been in talks with the club for a few weeks. Greegsy refused to transfer his contract to Charles Green’s newco and decided to walk out.

Besiktas had targeted Colombian international David Ospina but French club Nice were asking for too much money. McGregor was second choice but now he is on the verge of becoming the third former Rangers player to try his luck in Turkey in recent years.

Kenny Miller had a spell with Bursaspor in 2011 but failed to settle while Kris Boyd had an unsuccessful time at Eskisehirspor last year.

Beşiktaş have been looking to replace veteran keeper Rüştü Reçber who announced his retirement and Cenk Gönen who has been inconsistent.  The Istanbul club had the joint worst defensive record among the top-four clubs in the Turkish Super League last season, conceding 39 goals in the regular league campaign.

Beşiktaş finished last season in fourth position, however, will not be participating in the Europa League this year.

UEFA suspended the Istanbul club from European competitions on a one-year ban due to the club’s ongoing financial problems.
