Former Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari has been asked to appear for a hearing on October 29 by country’s anti-graft court, which has reopened five corruption cases against him.

Islamabad, Oct 14/Nationalturk – In a major setback to former Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari, an anti-graft court has re-opened five corruption cases against him and asked him to appear for a hearing on October 29.

Pakistan newspaper Express Tribune reported that Pakistan’s anti-graft Accountability court had reopened five references against Zardari on October 11 and summoned him before the court on October 29.

According to Accountability Court’s prosecution division’s report, Zardari is currently facing six references in accountability courts and five references – SGS, Contecna, ARY, Polo ground and Ursus tractors deal – have been reopened.

‘Zardari’s immunity to trial has ended’

In summon to Zardari, the Accountability court stated that former president’s immunity to trial had ended after he stepped down as Pakistan’s president.

The newspaper quoted an Accountability official as saying that no formal request had been made for reopening these references against Zardari from government and the court had done so on its own.

The hearing against the former president had been postponed indefinitely on grounds that the president had immunity from prosecution, though the apex court had not recognised the same.

Zardari has the distinction of being the first Pakistani civilian president to complete his five-year term and hand over power to another civilian president.
