Greek doctors and pharmacists on Tuesday continue on strike for a second day to demand payment of the Greek state´s debt in millions of euro to organizations including professionals from the two sectors.

Athens / NationalTurk – Greek doctors and pharmacists on Tuesday continue on strike for a second day to demand payment of the state´s debt in millions of euro to organizations including professionals from the two sectors.

The strike of 96 hours for doctors and 48 hours for pharmacists began Monday also to reject ongoing cuts and the neoliberal policies of the government coalition of Prime Minister Lucas Papademos.

Greek doctors say the strike is supported by professionals of the Institute of Social Welfare, independent organizations and health care centers, although the latter provide limited services to extreme emergency cases.

On the other hand, most pharmacies in Greece are closed due to the state’s inability to pay salaries.

Greek debt crisis is the main reason behind declining Greek economy and protests of Greeks. The National Pharmacists Association refuses to dispense drugs until the government pays its debts.

Greece is limiting its social spending with drastic adjustment measures approved under pressure from its creditors, the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, in exchange for financial aid after the country was on the verge of bankruptcy in 2010.

In the Greek budget for this year, health expenditures were estimated at seven billion euros, 3.6 billion less than in 2009.
