Health museum will reopen in Istanbul

The Health Museum, which opened in Istanbul in 1918, is now under restoration and will reopen within two years.

Health museum will reopen in IstanbulThe museum, to inform people about epidemic diseases, closed down 12 years ago, at which time many original artifacts and displays were lost. The museum will not be an ordinary one but will seek to educate visitors with interactive programs.

The Health Museum, a legacy of the late Ottoman Empire that attracted great interest until it was closed down 12 years ago, is set to reopen in Istanbul’s Sultanahmet neighborhood.

Anatolia news agency, Istanbul Deputy Gov. Feyzullah Özcan said the idea to reopen the museum emerged at the end of 2007, and the restoration projects of the historic building in Sultanahmet, where the museum is located, were done and approved by the municipal assembly.

“Rather than being a statistical museum, which keeps objects that are significant for museum inventory only, the museum will display some contemporary objects. It will be an interactive museum, which is updated according to current conditions, and there will also be events for the education of society. It won’t be a classical one, where people visit and leave, but they will spend time and learn about contemporary events,” said Özcan, adding that the restoration of the museum was expected to finish in two years.

Özcan said the museum’s exhibition and design sections were prepared while other technical problems were solved, adding that they would go out to tender in the next two weeks.

He added that the museum would be managed by the Advisory Scientific Council, made up of university lecturers under his leadership and that they carried out research for the restructuring of the museum.

The most difficult part was the research and planning process, he said, but added that his team had largely completed their preparation work. “The museum’s collection is small, but it will be known for its function, not its collection.”
