New Delhi, Jan 4/Nationalturk – At a time when India has been outraged over rising crime including rapes against women in India, a top rightwing Hindu leader has sparked a controversy by blaming the Western culture and excessive urbanisation for rising crimes against fearer sex.

“Such crimes (rapes) hardly take place in rural India but they occur frequently in Urban India,” rightwing Hindu leader and RSS (Right wing Hindu organization) chief Mohan Bhagwat said during a function in Silchar city of Indian state of Assam.

He blamed the Western culture and excessive urbanisation for rising crimes against women.

“Those living in urban India are highly influenced with the Western lifestyle and culture and this could be one of the reasons for increasing crimes against women,” Bhagwat said.

No  erosion of moral values  in rural India

He, however, said that there is no erosion of moral values among those living in the rural India. “You go to villages and forests of the country and there will be no such incidents of gang-rape or sex crimes. They are prevalent in some urban belts. Besides new legislations, Indian ethos and attitude towards women should be revisited in the context of ancient Indian values,” he said.

India has been outraged by the recent gang rape of a 23-year-old female in a moving bus. The girl, who was raped by six persons in a moving bus and later beaten with iron rods in Indian capital on December 16, died in Singapore hospital few days back.

Her gang rape outraged India and sparked protests and demonstrations across the country. There have been demands of more safety for women and new tough anti-rape legislation to prevent rapes in India.

Despite much hue and cry over the gang rape, the rapes continue to take place unabated across India and scores of such incidents are reported daily.
