Echoes of Houla massacre: Europe cogitate about Syria military intervention

Houla Massacre : Wake up call for Europe ?
Houla Massacre : Wake up call for Europe ?

Houla Massacre was most likely the final straw. The shadow of western power’s military intervention in Syria is looming after the Houla Massacre. For the first time Moscow is growing critical of Bashar al Assad government in Syria.

Damascus / NationalTurk – An end to the Syrian crisis could be brought about by a military intervention sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council

Saber-rattling in Europe as dying children’s voices echoe in Europe after Houla massacre

Paris joined other Western nations in expelling Syrian envoys in response to last week’s Houla massacre of 108 people in the west Syrian province of Houla, many of whom were women and children. Australia, Italy, France, Britain, Canada, Spain , Germany, Spain and the United States acted in concert to step up the pressure on Damascus. Bulgaria, the Netherlands and Switzerland also dismissed Syrian diplomatic missions.

Canada and other nations moved quickly Tuesday to deport Syrian diplomats in reprisal for Houla massacre in Syria last Friday that killed more than 110 people.

Houla Massacre : Wake up call for Europe ?

The United States, Germany, Britain, France, Australia, Spain, Turkey, Italy, Bulgaria and the Netherlands took action against Syrian diplomats dwelling in their respective countries Britain’s foreign secretary stated the countries involved in Tuesday’s expulsions would also push for tougher sanctions against Assad’s Syria after Houla massacre. Britain is now expelling three Syrian diplomats to protest the Houla killings, among them Charge d’Affaires Ghassan Dalla — Houla massacre’s Syria’s top ranking diplomat in London, Britain.

‘ It is not possible to allow Bashar al-Assad’s regime to massacre its own people in Syria,’ newly elected French president Hollande said.

RIA Novosti notes that in his speech, Francois Hollande also referred to French intellectual, philosopher and journalist Bernard-Henri Lévy, who, in March 2011, persuaded the then-French President Nicolas Sarkozy to recognize the leaders of the emerging Libyan opposition and to initiate a military campaign against the Gaddafi regime. Now, the new president of France is openly pushing for the same scenario in Syria, land of Houla Massacre.

Houla Massacre : UN,  EU, Arab League to co-ordinate the Syria intervention

Since the Houla massacre occurred, diplomats at the UN, the European Union and the Arab League have been working to co-ordinate new action, sanctions and plans on intervention against Syria and Assad led – Syria’s government.

‘ I want what happened in Libya to be perceived as proof that foreign intervention is possible in Syria. Homs today is Benghazi yesterday,’ Hollande justifies his reasoning.

A similar statement came even from unimportant Belgium, where Foreign Minister Didier Reynders’ office called for a foreign military presence or intervention in Syria.

‘ While the basis for a military intervention is lacking in the international community, including in the Arab world, it must be possible to ponder a military presence, including security zones and a peace force,’ his statement read.

According to the statement, the ‘ peace force ‘ would protect the UN’s unarmed observers, ensure humanitarian aid reached destination and enforce the respect of the ceasefire in Syria.

Brussels has joined a number of Western governments who had ordered out the Syrian diplomats. Belgium Foreign Ministry declared the Syrian ambassador and two other diplomats ‘ personae non grata ‘.

Syria : Bad News for Assad as Britain and France persuade Russia to resolve Syria crisis once and for all !

In a telephone conversation, British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Hollande expressed their desire to work with Russia to resolve the Syrian crisis. The two leaders agreed to act together to “bring an end to the bloody suppression of the Syrian people.”

The French president also said on Tuesday he would try to convince his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to back UN Security Council sanctions against Damascus. Hollande and Putin will meet in Paris on Friday.

‘ It is down to me and others to convince Russia and China, and also to find a solution which is not necessarily a military one,’ he stated. “We should find another solution for Syrian people ‘.

Russia’s message to Assad : Your Syrian government bears the main responsibility for Houla Massacre

The massacre in Houla seems to have become a turning point for Russia’s rhetoric on the Syrian crisis. International media note that Moscow administration has taken an unusually hard line against Syrian President Assad’s government.

‘ The Assad government bears the main responsibility for what is going on,’ Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed in Moscow on Monday, following a meeting with British Foreign Secretary William Hague. ‘ Any government in any country bears responsibility for the security of its citizens.’

Some suggest that Russian government is sending a warning message to Bashar Assad – that he needs to change course, otherwise he will lose Moscow’s support. Russia has grown increasingly critical of Damascus administration in recent months, but FM Lavrov’s latest remarks on Syria and Syrian government after Houla Massacre were unusually strong.

Losing Russia’s support is not something Syrian tyrant Assad could afford right now. He is almost completely isolated internationally, and Moscow is the only major power that was not solely blaming Bashar al-Assad for all the violence in the country, putting a large share of responsibility on the rebel forces. It was Russia and China who used their veto power in the UN in order to block unbalanced draft resolutions favoring one side of the conflict.

Now, the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov says Moscow has no interest in propping up Assad, but wants Syria to guide its own transition under the plan by UN’s special envoy Kofi Annan.

Germany on Tuesday announced Syria’s ambassador had three days to leave. Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said Germany and its allies hope “that this unambiguous message does not fall on deaf ears in Damascus.”

‘ The Syrian regime bears responsibility for the terrible events in Houla massacre,’ Westerwelle said in a statement. He said Germany will push for the UN Security Council to consider the situation in Syria again. Seems like Assad will get it after Houla massacre.

Turkey : Syrian diplomats shown out of country

Turkish authorities also have asked all Syrian diplomats in Ankara to leave Turkey in response to the recent Houla massacre today. The motive behind the deporting decision was cited as the horrible Houla massacre, where ‘ 110 innocent citizens, 50 of them children, were slaughtered.’
