Numerous dance videos for feel-good Pharrell Williams song “Happy” can be found on the net. Six young people from Tehran who uploaded their own version – and now ended up in prison. They were accused of publishing a “vulgar clips”.

Pharrell Williams’ song “Happy” is a global hit. Amateur filmmakers in many parts of the world have nachgetanzt the feel-good video for the song on the streets of their city, whether in Beijing or at the University of Marburg. Nothing else now have six Iranian youth done – but they ended up in prison.

Three young men and three young women from Tehran had recorded their version of “Happy” and put the clip on YouTube. The women danced while unveiled – and immediately the six youths were identified and detained by customs and internet police.

Following the publication of a “vulgar clips in cyberspace,” which runs counter to the “public decency”, everyone involved had been identified and arrested, the ISNA news agency reported, citing the Tehran police. The six detainees have confessed their “criminal acts”. A video clip showing clearly how they are interrogated by the police.

My “Happy” video was removed, but now other users have uploaded copies of the Tehran-version of “Happy”. On Twitter many users moored under the hashtag # FreeHappyIranians attention to the fate of the young. What punishment awaits the six, is unclear.

According to Iranian laws Western pop music, shared dance of unmarried men and women and public appearance of women are prohibited without the veil. The Internet is monitored heavily in Iran, access to YouTube is prohibited. The specially formed “morality police” sees to it. International observers practice regularly criticizing the human rights situation in the country.
