At least 670.41 tons of gold was imported by India this year so far.

New Delhi, July 9/Nationalturk – India has imported 670.41 tons of gold this year so far.

“India imported 1170.34 tons  of gold in 2011-12. In 2012-13, India imported 1013.92 tons of gold and this year so far India has imported 670.41 tons  of gold,” Indian Minister of State for Commerce & Industry,  Nirmala Sitharaman informed lawmakers in Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Indian parliament today.

Asked whether there was any figure about gold smuggled in the country, she said, “There are no such figures available regarding estimate of smuggled gold”.

‘About 500 kgs of smuggled gold seized in 3 yrs’

The minister said Customs, including Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, seized about 500 kgs of gold being smuggled into the country.

“In 2011, 153.26 Kgs of gold was seized. In 2012, 200.75 Kgs of smuggled gold was seized while in 2013 1267.26 Kgs of smuggled gold was seized,” she said.

The minister said as per Reserve Bank of India’s (central bank of India) Statistical supplement dated June 18, 2014 , 557.8 tons  of gold is lying with RBI.

“Government has no data available indicating the availability of gold with public,” added   Sitharaman.
