India was granted rights to host 2017 Under-17 football world cup by international football governing body FIFA.

New Delhi, Dec 6/Nationalturk – In what could be seen as a major development in Indian sports, India will host 2017 Under-17 football world cup.

India faced still competition from Ireland, 2010 world cup hosts South Africa and Uzbekistan to win the rights 2017 Under-17 FIFA world cup.

The under-17 football world cup in 2017 will be the biggest football tournament ever held on Indian soil. The Under-17 football world Cup takes every two years and UAE hosted this year’s cup while Chile will stage 2015 event.

FIFA awarded 2017 youth world cup to India in Brazil

The FIFA executive committee awarded the 2017 Under-17 football world cup to India after a meeting in the eastern Brazilian city of Salvador da Bahia on Thursday.

The bidding countries are required to submit written guarantees on tax exemption for broadcasters and sponsors, foreign exchange remittances, security, transport and accommodation of players, and visa, among others.

With the 2017 Under-17 football world cup to be held in India, Indian football has automatically secured a place in the tournament. India is currently ranked 148 in FIFA ranking.

‘It is historic day for Indian sports’

Reacting to the development, All India Football Federation president Praful Patel said, “It is historic day for India and Indian sports”.

He said hosting the Under-17 football world cup would have a huge impact in raising the profile of the game in cricket-mad country.

“FIFA has been extremely supportive of our ambitions and taking Indian football to world level. Hosting a tournament of such a stature will help galvanise the face of Indian football among the masses and youth of the country,” added Patel.

Former Indian football team’s captain I M Vijayan said hosting the event may change the face of Indian football.

“This tournament may change the face of football in India. We have the capacity to hold the tournament successfully. I feel at the youth and junior level we can compete at the world level. This event may bring a beginning of the change in Indian football,” he added.
