India is likely to supply gas to its arch rival and nuclear foe Pakistan, which is facing energy crisis.

New Delhi, Aug 7/Nationalturk – In a development which will help improve ties between two South Asian neighours, India is likely to supply gas to its arch rival and nuclear foe Pakistan, which is facing energy crisis.

“The negotiations were under way between India’s GAIL company and Pakistan’s Inter State Gas Systems (ISGS) for supply of 5 MMSCMD of lean gas to Pakistan,” India’s Petroleum & Natural Gas Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan informed the lawmakers in Rajya Sabha, upper house of Indian parliament.

He said the gas will be supplied to Pakistan by India for a period of five years.

India’s plans of exporting gas to Pakistan via a pipeline from Jalandhar in Punjab via Wagah-Attari border connecting India with Pakistan.

“Under this proposal, GAIL would lay 110 km pipeline infrastructure from Jalandhar to Amritsar/ Atari Border,” Indian minister said.

India has exempted LNG imports from custody duty

Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had exempted Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imports from customs duty if it is meant for onward sale to the neighbouring nation in the budget.

“Exemption from basic customs duty (of 5pc) is being granted on re-gassified LNG for supply to Pakistan,” the budget said.

The supply of gas to Pakistan, according to diplomats of two countries, will help improve bilateral diplomatic and economic ties between the two neighbours, who have fought three wars.

Pakistan is facing energy crisis and citizens of the country have to face upto 10-12 hours of load shedding (power curtailment) even in this scorching heat.
