India wants good neighbourly ties with Pakistan: Indian PM

In what could be a good sign to future ties of two rival countries, Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh Friday said his country wants good neighbourly ties with Pakistan.

New Delhi, May 30/Nationalturk – The Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh Friday said his country wants good neighbourly ties with arch rival Pakistan and resolution of all outstanding issues between the two countries peacefully.

“I and new Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif want to take bilateral relations forward and resolve all outstanding issues peacefully,” Singh told reporters after returning to capital from his state visit to Japan and Thailand.

He said on the very first day the Pakistan election results were coming out, he rang up PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif and conveyed his congratulations to him.

Nawaz Sharif’s party emerged as single largest party in May 11 general elections in Pakistan and Nawaz is set to take over as Prime Minister of the country on June 5.

“We discussed the Indo-Pak relations and I reciprocated his sentiments that relations between two countries should move forward,” Indian PM said.

He said he invited Nawaz to visit India. “He also invited me to visit Pakistan. There is an invitation from the Government of Pakistan for me to visit Pakistan. Both leaders had invited each other to visit their countries but dates for this have not been fixed as yet.” Singh said although no dates for visit have been fixed yet but the two leaders would certainly like to have good neighbourly relations with Pakistan.

He said it has been India’s consistent policy that that India- Pakistan  should deal with all their outstanding issues. “We are committed to resolve  them in a peaceful and amicable manner”.

‘Nawaz must convert positive signals into reality’

Indian External Affairs  minister Salman Khurshid had told reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday that Pakistan Prime Minister-elect Nawaz Sharif should convert into reality the positive signals he had given during his election campaign.

“There were many positive signals from Sharif with relation to India during the election campaign. We hope that he will work towards converting these positive signals into reality upon assuming office,” he said.
