Islamabad, Sept 9/Nationalturk – Indian born Manmoon Hussain was Monday sworn as 12th president of Pakistan.

His predecessor Asif Ali Zardari completed his five-year tenure on Sunday.

Chief Justice of  Supreme Court of Pakistan Iftikhar Ali Chaudhry administered the oath of office to Manmoon at Aiwan-e-Sadr (Presidency) here today.  The oath-taking ceremony was attended by Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The outgoing Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari was among others, who attended the function.

The 73-year-old Hussain, who become the 12th President of Pakistan, has spent most of his life as a key member of the business community in Karachi.

Manmoon was elected by lawmakers on July 30

Manmoon Hussain, who was born in India, was elected on July 30, 2013 by lawmakers of the four provincial assemblies and the parliament (National Assembly).

Manmoon, a candidate of ruling Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) which won the May 11 general elections, received a clear majority of votes of lawmakers against Justice (retd) Wajihuddin, the presidential nominee of opposition party, Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI). The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had boycotted the election. He won 432 votes and his only rival, Wajihuddin Ahmed only 77 in the presidential poll.

Prior to taking oath, Manmoon had told reporters that he wanted to be a symbol of the federation.

He said the role of the president is to make important decisions on the advice of the Prime Minister.

“If a president serves as a facilitator by following the law and the Constitution, what’s the problem with that?” he had earlier question questioned.

The former president Asif Ali Zardari, who earned the distinction of being the first civilian president in Pakistan to complete his tenure, was given a farewell guard of honour in Islamabad on Sunday.
