The condition of 23-year-old female student, who was gang-raped and hit with an iron rod in a moving bus in Indian capital New Delhi, is critical.

New Delhi, Dec 19/Nationalturk – The doctors have said 23-year-old female student, who was gang-raped and hit with an iron rod in a moving bus in Indian capital New Delhi, is in critical condition.

The Safdarjung hospital in Delhi, where the rape victim is undergoing treatment,  said it is a severe and a very unusual case, which the hospital has never seen in terms of the injuries. “She has received severe genital and intestinal injuries.”

The hospital also did not rule out septicemia and gangrene, which is quite likely in cases like these.

“The girl’s condition is critical and deteriorating. Yesterday morning, she was better but in the evening, situation fluctuated and her health deteriorated,” Dr BD Athani, Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung hospital, Delhi told a wire news agency last evening.

The doctors said there has been no change in her health condition since late evening and she continues to be on full ventilator support.

According to health experts, a patient runs the risk of lung infection if she is on ventilator continuously for more than 72 hours.

The doctors attending on her said the rape victim’s platelet count has fallen. “We will now constantly keep her on the ventilator. The girl has underwent four surgeries and she may need more surgeries”.

However, they said till her condition stabilizes or improves, they cannot go ahead with more surgeries.

The doctors, who have been attending on her said, the girl’s intestines have been badly ruptured. “Besides, there are injury marks all over her body. The girl has infection in the blood. The infection is due to external injuries”.

“She (the rape victim) is in extreme pain and has been put on a steady dose of Morphine,” added the doctors.

The doctors have said next 24-48 hours are very critical for her. “Her chances of survival will improve if she passes those 48 hours”.

23-year-old girl was gang-raped in a moving bus

The 23-year old girl, who is a medical student, was gang-raped in a moving bus in Delhi on Sunday evening by six persons including driver of the bus. She and her male friend were later beaten with iron rods and thrown out of the bus in a semi-naked condition.

Four people including driver of the bus have been arrested. Two other accused are absconding and police have launched a massive manhunt to track them down and bring them to justice. The accused have been identified as Ram Singh (driver of the vehicle), his brother Mukesh, Vinay Sharma, an assistant gym instructor, and Pawan Gupta, a fruit seller.

The gang-rape and torture of a 23-year-old girl has left people across India shell shocked. The massive outrage has spread across cities, town, villages and the demand for justice has grown. The parliamentarians, civil society members, Bollywood celebrities, lawyers, media persons, women groups, businessmen and common man are demanding stern and quick action against the rapists. Some are demanding that the rapists be publicly hanged so that such incidents don’t recur in future.
