India’s newly elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi held telephonic talks with Chinese premier and invited Chinese president to visit India later this year.

New Delhi, May 29/Nationalturk – After inviting Pakistan Premier Nawaz Sharif to his swearing-in ceremony, India’s newly elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held telephonic talks with Chinese premier and invited Chinese president to visit India later this year.

“PM Modi spoke on the telephone to  Chinese premier Li Keqiang this afternoon at the latter’s initiative,” an Indian official spokesman said.

He said Chinese premier congratulated Modi on his victory in the recent general elections held in the country. “He conveyed Chinese government’s desire to establish robust partnership with the new government of India for further development of relations between the two nations.”

Prime Minister Modi thanked Chinese PM for his message of felicitations.

‘China always priority in India’s foreign policy’

Noting that China was always a priority in India’s foreign policy, Indian PM underlined his government’s resolve to utilize the full potential of strategic and cooperative partnership with China and his keenness to work closely with the Chinese leadership to deal with any outstanding issues in bilateral relations by proceeding from the strategic perspective of our developmental goals and long-term benefits to our peoples.

PM Modi welcomed greater economic engagement between the two countries.

“The two leaders agreed to maintain frequent high-level exchanges and communication. Prime Minister Modi extended through Premier Li an invitation to President Xi Jinping to pay a visit to India later this year,” the spokesman said.

Modi’s telephone conversation with Chinese premier was his first with a foreign head of State since taking over as Prime Minister of India on May 26.

Political analysts say newly elected Indian PM wants to have good relationship with neighbouring country and has made a good start in forging closer ties with arch rivals Pakistan and China.
