Mumbai / NationalTurk – Bal Thackaray death will leave a legacy of fear in India ! When Bal Thackeray, a one-time cartoonist turned Hindu fundamentalist leader of India, passed away on Saturday, the city of Mumbai came to a standstill. More than a million people came out to watch the procession, thousands of police, including the Rapid Action Force, were deployed to maintain calm, and commercial businesses chose to shut down.

According to media reports, Thackeray’s health condition deteriorated on last Wednesday evening and since then he is on life support.

A group of doctors and paramedics are monitoring his situation round the clock at his Mumbai’s ‘Matoshree’ residence. Thousands of his party workers assembled outside his house after the news about his worsening health condition spread. His son and president of Shiv Sena Uddhav Thackeray urged the party workers to pray for him.

“I have not lost hope. We are facing a crisis, we shall overcome,” he told them.

He appealed people to remain calm and pray for his fast recovery.

Several film personalities including Amitabh Bachan, his son Abhishek Bachan, Sanjay Dutt visited Thakeray and enquired about his health.

Sources said Amitabh and his son sustained minor injuries in the rowdy crowds. “Yes both Abhishek and me were injured with cuts, but are fine and back home,” the senior Bachchan wrote on Twitter.

Security beefed up

The authorities have beefed up security in Mumbai especially around the residence of Thackeray. Hundreds of police and paramilitary men have been deployed to keep a watch on the movement of people and detect any suspect movement.
Mumbai police spokesman Nisar Tamboli told a wire news agency that they have deployed lot of forces on the ground. “Extra measures are being taken,” he added.
