Indian Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a contempt notice to country’s former Army chief General (Retd) V K Singh over his recent remarks on age row.

New Delhi, Oct 1/Nationalturk – Indian Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a contempt notice to country’s former Army chief General (Retd) V K Singh, who has made disclosures that army has been providing money to ministers in Indian Kashmir, over his recent remarks on age row.

“Prima facie Gen (Retd) V K Singh’s statement undermines authority of the court and scandalises its proceedings,” SC bench comprising Justices RM Lodha and HL Gokhale said today.

The apex court directed Singh to file his response by October 23 as to why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him.

Apex Court had taken suo motu cognizance of Singhs’ remarks

The Supreme Court had yesterday taken suo motu cognisance of former General’s remarks against its order on his age row and decided to hear the contempt case from today.

The court, which had dismissed Singh’s plea against Indian government on his age row, took cognisance of a media report quoting former army chief in which he had said why the apex court had not decided his age on the basis of matriculation certificate if such document is relied upon to decide the age of a rape victim.

“If the court can define the age of a rape victim on the basis of his matriculation certificate then why has the Supreme Court failed to decide my age despite checking and cross checking my certificate?” Singh had said.

Singh had lost legal battle on age row

Singh had on February 10, 2012 lost his legal battle on the age row in the Supreme Court. Indian army’s ex-chief had stated that his date of birth was May 10, 1951 and not May 10, 1950 as mentioned in his service record. However, the Apex Court rejected it saying his date of birth would continue to be May 10, 1950 and not reconciled as May 10, 1951 as mentioned in his matriculation certificate.

General V K Singh retired as Indian army’s chief on May 31, 2012. He became Indian army chief in May 2010. He was the first trained commando to be promoted general and was also the first serving Indian military chief to take the Government to court.

‘Army provides funds to ministers in Indian Kashmir’

After his retirement, Gen Singh joined many anti-corruption rallies staged by social activist Anna Hazare. He recently attended the rally of controversial rightwing BJP leader Narendra Modi.

The former Indian army chief recently made revelations that Indian army has been providing money to ministers in Indian Kashmir since 1947 when India achieved freedom.

Earlier, a report in Indian newspaper Indian Express has alleged that General Singh during his tenure tried to topple Indian Kashmir government by paying Rs 1.19 crores (Indian currency) to Ghulam Hassan Mir, present Agriculture minister in Indian Kashmir government.
