India’s legendary singer Manna Dey dies at 94

India’s legendary singer and Indian cinema’s golden voice Manna Dey died at the age of 94 in Indian city of Bangalore on Thursday morning.

New Delhi, Oct 24/Nationalturk – India’s legendary singer and Indian cinema’s golden voice Manna Dey died at the age of 94 in a hospital in Bangalore city in South India on Thursday morning.

“Manna Dey was being treated for respiratory illness and renal failure in a hospital in Bangalore. He was shifted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) few days back and died early today of cardiac arrest,” his family members said.

The singer was on dialysis since September.

His body will be kept for public viewing at Bangalore’s Ravindra Kala Shetra, where people are expected to pay homage to him. Late, his body will be cremated in the afternoon.

The singer is survived by his two daughters Shuroma and Sumita. His wife died of cancer last year.

Manna Dey was born in 1919

Manna Dey, who was considered as Indian cinema’s golden voice, was born in 1919. His real name is Prabodh Chandra Dey but he became famous by his nickname Manna.

He had begun his playback career with the film ‘Tamanna’ in 1942 and sung over 4000 songs for different films during his singing career. He sang for hundreds of Indian films. He sang in many Indian languages including Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, Punjabi and Bhojpuri.

The singer had received many awards including for his contribution to Indian cinema.

‘Another legend has left us’

India’s Information and Broadcasting minister Manish Tewari while expressing his condolences said Manna Dey’s voice and unique style enthralled a whole generation. “Another legend has left us”.

Noted Indian film director Mahesh Bhatt said Manna Dey’s voice shall linger forever.

Indian film actor Manoj Bajpayee said Manna Dey’s music will live for 1000 yrs.

Many Indian actors, filmmakers and producers have also expressed their condolences and termed his (Manna Dey’s) death as great loss for Indian film industry.
