Indonesian authorities issued a level two alert, one step below the most serious of “dangerous,” after the Mount Soputan volcano erupted early Sunday clouds of smoke and searing gas that shot up nearly 20,000 feet into the atmosphere.

State volcanologist say no one was injured when Mount Soputan, located on Sulawesi island, exploded early Sunday. The nearest villages are well outside the danger zone and there are no immediate evacuation plans.

Indonesia : Ring of Fire in Pacific

Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago, is located on the so-called Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Soputan lies around 2,160 kilometers northeast of capital Jakarta. It last erupted in 2008. In the past two years, at least three major volcanoes, including Anak Krakatau, have showed signs of increased activity, but there has been no serious eruption.

Specialists and leaders of North Sulawesi province were closely monitoring the situation and advising locals to keep informed and stay six kilometers away from the crater.

Mount Soputan, located in Suwalesi Island, is one of the most active volcanoes in the country, erupting almost every year.
