The Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay, who was critically injured in an attack by fellow prisoner in a high security prison in Indian administered Kashmir, has succumbed to injuries in hospital today.

New Delhi, May 9/Nationalturk – The 52-year-old Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay, who was critically injured in an attack by fellow prisoner, a former Indian army man, in a high security jail in Indian administered Kashmir, has succumbed to injuries in hospital on Thursday morning. Indian government has said his body will be flown to Pakistan.

The doctors at PGI hospital Chandigarh, where Sanaullah was admitted, said the injured Pakistani prisoner passed away at 0630 hours today due to multiple organ failures.

They said Dr Y K Batra, who had been treating the patient for a week, tried his best to revive him but to no avail.

Sanaullah’s kidney had failed on yesterday and he was put on dialysis. He also suffered neurological problems and was in deep coma since May 3, when he was attacked with a sharp edged weapon by a fellow Hindu prisoner (a former Indian army soldier) in a high security Kotbalwal prison in Jammu, winter capital of Indian administered Kashmir. The assault came a day after the death of an Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who was attacked by fellow inmates in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail.

A spokesman of PGI hospital said the patient had become extremely critical yesterday. “He had developed renal failure with no urine output since morning. Hence he was put on peritoneal dialysis by Nephrologists”.

He said postmortem of Sanaullah’s body will be conducted by the medical board in presence of a magistrate and videography will be done of the process.

India’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin told reporters that Indian government tried to take all necessary measures to save Sanaullah. “We are in touch with the Pakistan authorities and will make all arrangements to facilitate handing over the body,” he said.

Indian Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said body of Sanaullah Ranjay will be handed over to Pakistan.  “We will hand over the body to Pakistan,” he said.

He said Ministry of External Affairs is coordinating with the Pakistani authorities to complete the formalities to send back his body home. “Once the formalities are done, we will hand over the body,” he said.

Sources said after completing of post-mortem and other legal formalities, Sanaullah’s body will be handed over to officials of Pakistan’s High Commission in India, who would then airlift his body to Pakistan in a plane.

Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi said Sanaullah’s body will be flown from Chandigarh to Lahore or Sialkot. “Two Pakistan High Commission officials will escort the body alongwith two of Sanaullah’s relatives,” it said.

A resident of Sialkot, Pakistan, Sanuallah was serving a life term after he was convicted by a court following his arrest in 1999.

Indian Kashmir’s CM apologises

The Chief Minister of Indian administered Kashmir Omar Abdullah offered sincere apology to family of Sanaullah.

“Although it’s scant consolation I would like to offer a sincere apology to family of Sanaullah  and my sympathies for their loss. While the inquiry will fix responsibility for any dereliction of duty, the fact that this happening at all is a matter of great regret,” he wrote on Twitter soon after his Sanaullah was declared dead.

Meanwhile, India’s Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur told reporters all Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails are being secured. “I hope Pakistan, too, will reciprocate.”.
