Russia reacts surprisingly mild on the diplomatic back-and-forth about whether Syria peace conference. Foreign Minister Lavrov called the projection of Iran, although a mistake – but it was not a disaster. The government in Tehran is disappointed.

Russia’s government, however, before the start of Syria peace conference, which begins on Wednesday in Montreux, restrained. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the projection of Iran a “mistake”. “But it is not a catastrophe,” he said Tuesday in Moscow.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon had unloaded Iran to pressure the Syrian opposition and the United States. “I regret that this whole story does not contribute to the authority of the United Nations,” Lavrov said.

Against the Iranian participation in the conference, the sections of the opposition had resisted seeking regime change in Syria, said the top Russian diplomat. The leadership in Tehran was disappointed at the rejection. “The projection was probably under political pressure and was therefore a very regrettable and disappointing step,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afcham said on Tuesday. Iran has never imposed, always take a firm position and at no time accept any preconditions. Therefore, the reasons for the projection are definitely other than those mentioned by the Secretary General, the spokeswoman said.
